Powder Coating Bullets on Silicone vs Steel Baskets – VR to Elvis Ammo

(The original version of this video was posted to YouTube on March 3, 2017.)

This is a video response to the “Powder Coating Bullets On “Silicone” VS “Wire Mesh” ?” video posted by Elvis Ammo (https://youtu.be/coEneezUDO8).

I was surprised by the horrible results he experienced using a silicone mat and decided to do my own mini-experiment to see if I could get similar or better results.

These bullets were cast with the RCBS 30-180-FN bullet mold. You can purchase that mold here:  https://amzn.to/2Iz5Xir

Thoughts that crossed my mind were firstly, it might pay to coat the trays with a non-stick paint such as this – https://www.amazon.com/DuPont-Teflon-Non-Stick-Dry-Film-Lubricant/dp/B018FTA5WA – Secondly – and this is just a thought because I am still trying to get powder to stick to my bullets – standing the bullets on end should always give you a better coat. My first try has been on .312 LEE cast bullets for my .303 British rifle and the prime reason for that is to remove the need for gas checks and lube. I was going to try and find a way of baking… Read more »

Mornin Duncan…trouble getting the powder to stick huh? Don’t feel like the Lone Stranger in that department…here’s a poll I took some time back that reveals all the details you can imagine about powder coating & whether or not the pole’ed were satisfied with their results. Take a look at it and see whether or not it might help you… > http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?326134-(2)-The-Devil-s-in-the-Details-gt-gt-gt-gt-gt-PC-Coatings-lt-lt-lt-lt-lt

I found my biggest “powder won’t stick” cause was moisture. Even just humid not really wet bullets seems to repel the HF powder coat like vinegar and oil. I use a modified Elvis method, A Johnnys Reloading bench inspired PID controller driving a mini crock pot set at 120 F I toss the bullets in there awhile to warm and dry them, then warm bullets into the #5 $1 store sealing container with the powder paint, shake em about 30 to 90 seconds, it varies. When they look right, on to the hardware cloth basket and into the 400 F… Read more »

Evenin Tom…I’ve morphed into a method to PC after a while of doing it now. When I cast then it’s automatically PC and size day too. I really think that besides moister and fingerprint oils fouling up the works that the fresher out of the pot those casts are the better the coverage using a quality PC.

Definitely the less handling the better, I completely agree Pouring pot to P.C. to oven in one continuous operation. I happen to use a large array [7KW] of grid tied solar panels to pour and bake bullets. Before you brand me a tree hugger, it pays back @ 3X bank interest, is a safe investment compared to Wall Street at least for us. I do power intense stuff on sunny days. Bet you don’t know many others doing solar bullet casting! Worked in avionics for years and am still a bit of a geeky old fart. Love your Avatar,CharlieBrassStuffer

That was a great way to compare….none of the “I think this is better…” type hype, just empirical results. Just like Joe Friday used to say…”Just the facts Mam!”
