The Case For Neck Sizing The 45/70

Most shooters automatically go to full length resizing their 45/70 rounds…but what is happening when we do that? And if our brass is being excessively worked for no good advantage, then perhaps neck sizing is the way to go…

G’day Steve, Yes, I neck size only with my 45-70, but use the Short sizing die. I did however, run into a problem when I gave a friend some of my low power loads to shoot in his newly acquired rifle. His chamber was huge and the returned cases were so oversized it took me about 5 minutes per case to FL resize them back to suit my chamber. The short sizing dies allows me to actually see how far down I’m actually resizing, so I can adjust the die to suit the seating depth of various projectiles. It does… Read more »

Good to know cookie! Makes sense, I never go to die makers recommendations, always do it just this way using my fire formed brass. Back the die out, threading in slowly till the fire formed brass chambers in my rifle.
