44 Spl, Penta Hollow Point, BHN 8.0, Bare Gel (PC HP Test)

(This video was first posted to YouTube on April 28, 2017.)

Shooting the 44 Special cast with the penta hollow point, 1:40 alloy with a BHN of 8.0 into Clear Ballistics Gel from my Charter Arms Bulldog. This series is a long experiment testing powder coated cast lead hollow point bullets made from various alloys and fired at various velocities.

Pretty little flowers! Well, most of them…. that really IS bizarre how all of them, with the one exception, would perform admirably, and one turned out goofy. Velocities looked relatively consistent, but as my Cousin Charlie said, it appears that the oddball hit the gel sideways, and continued through the gel as it was still turning backwards. Perhaps with a bit more velocity, all of your future freedom pills will fly as they should? I really need to get a 2nd mortgage on my house so I can get one of those molds! I like the results!

Wonder how they react to higher speeds…
I am also thinking the keyhole issue with the one may have been a casting issue where an imperfect mix of metals contributed to the bullet yawing in flight.

Forgive me but I’m a little confused, which is normal for me. Did you cast the bullets yourself or purchase them? I also carry a .44 in MT for use in the event of running into a Badger. I have been loading Speer Gold Dots which are made to expand at .44 Special velocities and do work but your test bullets appeared to expand more fully.
Thanks,

Hello, I wanted to say thank you for your informative video. It will be interesting to see the results with the denim at those speeds. Thank you

It sure looked like the cast that hit sideways actually hit that way in flight. Makes me wonder why? I like the penta but if that tin content is not there I think they are more prone to fragging than a cup point HP. Some people don’t pay that much attention to their blends of Sn + Pb not realizing how much control the blend has along with speed. Looks like this is the bottom side of the HP window for expansion, I hope you’ll juice them up some so we can see how that blend & profile reacts to… Read more »
