(This video was first posted to YouTube on May 5, 2017.)

Shooting the 44 Special cast with the large round hollow point, 1:40 alloy with a BHN of 8.0 into Clear Ballistics Gel from my Charter Arms Bulldog. This series is a long experiment testing powder coated cast lead hollow point bullets made from various alloys and fired at various velocities.

That SWC HP profile is definitely for magnum’s, gotta tough nose on it…I’ll bet that heavy nose design came from Elmer Keith’s work through Ideal Moulds back in the day, back in his .357 Magnum experiments.
Even when you have a fail you still learn something about HP’s…they’re finicky & you have to handle them just right…sorta like Women!

I don’t know much about any woman , have been single for 3 times as long as I was married. I have learned a little about reloading over the past 30 or so years of doing it and you are correct. There is a small window at witch a hollow point will work properly and every one of them is a little different. Oh and I am a little slow on this technology thing to but am starting to figure it out. I have been watching and following a lot of you on here but had to get my sons… Read more »

Welcome aboard Aaron, it’s good to have a new family member here at TRN. We have some very knowledgeable & talented handloaders and shooters, long and short barrels.
The idea is to help each other with whatever expertise we individually bring to the table.
There is always somebody working outside the box around here.
Find out how to get on over at TRN Slack where in the # ole-porch-dogs channel we try to chew the fat every morning.

Thanks for the great video! I do believe you are correct. It’s time to put the go fasters on.

Not very consistent with velocities, which directly correlated with the penetration numbers. I believe there may be too much material surrounding the hollow point, resulting in no expansion, compared to the penta HPs. I’ll be interested to see how more velocity will affect the expansion. Good tests!

Could you try a softer lead?

Wow, I sure expected better. I wonder if the Phillips treatment would help these.
