357 Mag (1100 fps), Hollow Point, BHN 8.7, Bare Gel (PC HP Test)

(This video was first posted to YouTube on July 28, 2017.)

Shooting the 357 Magnum Hollow Point (loaded to ~1100 fps), 1:25 alloy with a BHN of 8.7 into Clear Ballistics Gel from my Taurus 66. This series is a long experiment testing powder coated cast lead hollow point bullets made from various alloys and fired at various velocities.

These will be good at .38 velocities, it seems. And the previous loads looked good. As Tree Top Flyer said, maybe raising the BJN would give you more solid results. For .357 (usually 1000-1100 fps) I usually try to get my BHN around 12-16. I guess I won’t be the only Taurus shooter when I get my new 627.

I’ve been wanting a 627 for a while, 7 shot .357 with a 4″barrel under 30 Oz… perfect carry gun… After I sold my Security six to go to my friend’s wedding I traded for a Taurus 65. A little heavier than the Security six, but it’s a hair thinner and I like having a 4″ barrel on my carry .357. The only detractor for the 627 in my book is that you can’t get decent speedloaders for them, just HKS types, no safariland etc.

That’s incredible to see real results for cast hollow points. Do you think raising the BHN a little would hold it together better in higher velocities?
