44 Mag (1035 fps), Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point, Bare Gel (PC HP Test)

(This video was first posted to YouTube on August 11, 2017.)

Shooting the 44 Magnum loaded with the 200 grain Speer GDHP at about 1035 fps into Clear Ballistics Gel from my S&W 629. This series is a long experiment testing powder coated cast lead hollow point bullets made from various alloys and fired at various velocities.

Seems to me that they actually over expanded, seeing as the petals are completely curled back and under. There must be a sweet spot in velocity where those petals would be straight out the side like little knives tearing up the tissue.

When it comes to hunting, I’d rather drive a FP round all the way through the animal and of course…’shot placement is everything.’
No comment on the factory HP’s…they are taboo here in the ‘RabbitHole’! heheee

It’s almost like properly designed and tested handloads out perform factory offerings😜 That being said, I have really been looking at solid copper rounds. I just need to figure out how to make them at home.

I use Gold Dots as defense rounds in all my handguns. Factory 380 and 9mm and handloads in 40, 357,45, 45 Colt and 454. I did quite a bit of testing with my 357 and 40 cal. XTPs, Golden Sabers and Silver tips fell to pieces and the Gold Dots had a nice mushroom.

I also use Gold Dot in almost everything. The only exception being HST in 38spcl.

Interesting results. I would have thought, believing the hype about Gold Dots, that they would out perform everything, including cast bullets. I REALLY need to get a hollow point mold! Thanks Bacon!

Not a Speer fan, would like to see this with XTP bullets. But the lead bullet preformed much better

XTP are designed to balance expansion with barrier blindness. They rarely expand the way these Gold Dots and HST’s do. Police like them though because they will stay together and have moderate expansion after passing through dense barriers, which is something police are more likely to need than civilians defending themselves.

Ive use XTP in 357,41,44,45 and 500. They have always worked great on whitetail and have always expanded
