Taurus Tracker 627: Federal 130gr HST Wadcutter at 357Mag Velocity

I was able to score some 130gr Federal HST Wadcutters used in Federal Micro HST 38 Special +P self defense ammo. I have tested the 38 Special +P and it performs really well in Clear Ballistics gel. My curiosity lead me to perform this test with 357 Magnum as there is very little data available for 357 Magnum full wadcutters. Sure, there may be a reason for this as typical lead wadcutters will lead the barrel of your revolver at 357 Magnum velocities, but when Federal released their 130gr jacketed wadcutter I just had to evaluate them at greater velocity. It seems like the perfect match.

Today I tested across the chronograph but it was too cold and cloudy to get consistent velocity readings. I will test my final load again on a better day with improved lighting.

This was a tough video to make as all of the equipment was malfunctioning, the camera completely froze and stopped recording at one time, and the chronograph had to be weighed down because the wind was blowing so hard.

At the completion of this video the Taurus Tracker now has 1042 rounds down range, with 4 primer light strikes, all with TulAmmo Small Pistol Primers. Don’t forget to visit dayattherange.com for a detailed review.

These loads as seen were safe in this revolver, please do not attempt to replicate this load without working up what will be best in your revolver.

Hey guys, I have two Taurus revolvers which originally I loved. The 4″ Model 66 was my first. It has one flaw in it’s design which is a thin forcing cone. Although unbelievably to me it made 3600 rounds of almost all full house 125gr Magnum loads( yes I did shoot a single 38 special once) before ejecting the side of it out of the gun, but man did it shoot very, very well for accuracy till then. My 610 is the only thing I shoot as well. But 3600 rounds may be the true tale of the tape on… Read more »

Thanks for the video, really like your videos. What’s the best 357 Taurus? SA/DA? I’m thinking of dipping my toe. I’M a pistol guy but that tracker is dead sexy!

Just remember in a Taurus, when ported the last in looses all rifling for the brake. So a 5″ barrel is actually a 4″ with a brake.

You’re a lot hardier than I am! I’m going to PM you tomorrow afternoon, because I need to know how you’re getting video of the Eagle Camera. My testing today was a major failure, and like you, I want to give the camera as good of a test as possible. The Taurus 627 Tracker was one of the 3 revolvers I was considering, when I bought my new one. Try to get thawed out.
